PAL Point

The iPAL Point builds on the elegant, fun and high-class design language of the iPAL radio. In basic terms, the iPAL Point is a standalone design which provides the iPAL with a prominent place in a living room or lounge. It can be placed anywhere in a room, although can be no further than 20 cm from an electrical socket if the user wishes to plug the radio in.

PAL Pointless

Sahara PAL

he SAHARA is an elastic stool, composed of wooden rings. Glued together. Flexible. Chris Ruhe, former student of the HM College won the second prize with it at the WOOD CHALLENGE 2005.
The PAL is placed inside the Sahara Stool and gets a mysterious look, like the Sahara desert. It is a music stool with the PAL inside. Try it, you will love it, sitting ON your music... Idea: Willem Schulpen

The Pal-let

Since the ‘Grand Jury’ extended the final closing date and our creativity never ends, we have created… The PAL PALLET or PAL-LET Waste PALLETS (…) on our premises were turned into a ‘giant staff terrace table’ by Marvin Spier (Da VINCI COLLEGE) with help of Alexander van Helden (Wellant College) They are on sale now at Ritmeester BV! The PAL radio can be stored underneath the table-top (see pictures). On this large table, several groups of staff can enjoy their own programme without disturbing eachother or enjoy the same station, loud….

RoverPAL

This case gives the PAL the ability to rove about.
eing frequently outside gardening, we found ourselves to continually forgetting our PAL at the last bunch of weeds. Using the mechanics from a small radio control car, we can now just drive it over to where we are. It's not the fastest, and sometimes we end up navigating it into other weeds, but it will eventually find us.

Material: echanics from a RC car, metal chassis. Power is tapped from the PAL's rechargable battery pack.

Material: This prototype is made out of wood, but the original idea is to make it in rubber.

Kryptonight

I developed a case wich is soft that provides a good protection against falling but also to fluids . It looks firm but it feels smooth and it's waterproof. But the real innnovation of it is the illuminating effect. Looking white in daylight changes in lightblue glowing in darkness. A unique concept that pleases adults as well as kids. The shape is minimalistic but looks smoother due to the rounded corners. So it's kind of female form of straight hard minimalism, a trend that is about to gain more interest for the future. These ideas were born out of research I did with the company 'moon'.

PAL Pool

PAL Flow

he idea is to create a fluent movement which lifts up and presents the PAL in a flow. Flow as a state of being, which comes automatically. But you cannot control when comes and goes. It's just there. Or not. Just like the moment you feel you want to put on your PAL. You never know when this moment will come. It just comes and you enjoy. Enjoy your flow, enjoy your PAL.

The PAL Bag

Softening the rectangular shapes of the PAL Radio, I created a little bag in which the PAL radio can be transported. Made of triangular, rectangular and irregular pieces of material, all stitched by hand. When listening to the beautiful sound of the PAL radio, it comes from a bag so it is hidden…

Paint - PAL

Designer: Mieke Siemons
Crafted: Mieke Siemons

Designer: Mieke Siemons

THE PAL MUSIC BOX

Made of very ‘open’ material (to let the sound through…) I created a box-type case for the PAL radio. The lid – a little reminder to the ‘Oriënt Express’ is openable so you can easily turn the knobs. The PAL radio is a ‘music box’ so this is the name of the case. And since the design of the PAL radio is extremely timeless I dated it in roman…(MMVI or 2006).

Zwerfkunst-Mijlpa(a)l

Hehheh heh...dance baby come on dance with me.... tralala....doe de paalcasedans met de mijlpaalcase ...o yeah....

TooHoT

TooHoT is a both a fun and practical addition to the PAL when traveling by boat, car or plane.
Technically not a Case but a Base, my entry adds a surreal twist to the elegant design of the PAL. The Base itself is made of a soft and friendly silicon polymer matching the exterior finish of the PAL. Due to the high grip properties of the material, the base stabilises the PAL during travel conditions like rough seas, speed bumps and minor earthquakes.

Dorade PAL

Dorade vents on a (sailing) yacht are often protected by a stainless steel tubing. This inspired Willem Schulpen to design a DORADE PAL. The PAL radio is excellent for use on board of your yacht! The STAINLESS COMPANY (www.thestainlesscompany.com) is a well known supplier of stainless steel yacht components. And Jean Paul Hulsman was so kind to realize the PAL DORADE with help of the craftsmen in the OSS-based company.

THE SWISS PAL CASE

Switzerland –where I lived, worked and traveled extensively will never go out of my mind: The beautiful country of punctual and clean Railways and the world famous clock. The country of the unforgettable Matterhorn and Chocolates, all united in The Toblerone! A country of cabinetmakers…. The PAL in Switzerland. And this SWISS PAL CASE offers you music, time and sweets! All portable: time, taste and sound! All your senses can enjoy it!

The PLUG IN PAL

Anton van Dellen, in search for the simplest PAL CASE and combining the AC-DC-plug as a support for the PAL radio Created the PLUG IN PAL (in dutch: STEKKER PAL) A metal base with an opening for the plug supports the PAL radio So it's a 'console' for the PAL radio

Material: Galvanized metal

PAL Kvadrant

Searching the absolutely (?*) simplest possible shape to ‘encase’ the PAL Radio I crossed two plane surfaces in a 90 degree angle. Since the PAL radio is exactly square on top, the angle of both planes is 90 degrees. * Is there anyone out there who invents a simpler version?

Material: Finnforest birchwood multiplex, Bisazza Mosaics, Shells from Waddenzee, Corian tiles.

The Swan PAL

The pal case on the previous page, made of oak , has the shape of a swan or if you want to look at it an other way, you could see it as a wave. The curling elements are it’s characteristics. The top curl reflects the head of a swan and has as optional hanging function. If you choose to hang it, it can rock with the movements of the ship. In the glass you will find holes which give you the opportunity to use the buttons while the pal is in the case

PAL at the TWIN TOWERS

September 9, 2001. I will never forget where I, part of a twin was when that news came through the radio. Driving around in Friesland I had just visited the Jopie Huisman Museum, Workum (C it!). Where were you that moment? American Tourists in my hotel were shocked, looking CNN all night.
Materials : Beechwood (Twin Towers, the red top symbolizes the blast and fire), Finnforest Birchwood multiplex, symbolizing modern skyscrapers and Chrysler building), Mahogany (Babylon Tower), Bisazza Mosaics (yellow: flames, black: symbolizing death and mourning, Corian: blue symbolizing: hope after grief). The GREY PAL symbolizing the enormous ash clouds and layers of dust in NYC.

HEY PAL

Inspired by Andy Warhol
Saturday June 24. Walking around the Ritmeester premises, Verkuil & Moree were harvesting the hey on the dike. Immediate idea: The HAY PAL! Inspired by one of my most favorite artists ever: Andy Warhol, so the pictures are part of the play… Rollin’ PAL’s are coming…! The Verkuil & Moree harvester in the background. Robbie Williams from the speaker… Music Hay Roll….Magical Moments!

PAL Globalization

I depicted this theme by means of a ‘travel case’ in which the PAL can travel across the whole world. With it I also refer to the voice of the media which is omnipresent around the world and asserts her influence. The recommendation on the front side to wear ear protection is meant as a wink to the listeners to define the sense and nonsense of the broadcast information themselves.
Designer: Ineke van der Blom
Crafted: Ineke van der Blom

PAL Chariot

This version, executed in steel can be identified with 'little but brave'. And it is very clever to go out into the world well prepared... The armour is easily removable and doesnot obstruct easy listening! In 'the adult world' this design is omnipresent.
Furthermore I would like to refer to the militancy of the radio medium, to protect or or realize freedom (free speech) This extreme 'dressing up' also serves as a protection in dangerous circumstances like workshops where often heavy objects have to be handled.
Designer: Rein Bril

Material: Steel

PAL Wladiwostok

To show our ‘link’ with the people of this Siberia City. This PAL CASE reflects the harsh climate conditions: on the outside the protecting soft fur* coat (*of course it is not real fur…Greenpeace!) On the back the ‘stainless’ part of the season and bolts: the Siberian isolation during bitter cold winter seasons.
CASE: Finnforest Birchwood multiplex

PAL BOX Le Sac

This lovely soft bag hides the PAL radio, a lady can take the PAL radio anywhere… You can listen to the music without seeing any radio, even tune and operate the knobs. It softens the ‘square design’ of the PAL and makes it very female. The sides are all quilted by hand.

PAL Patrick Schols

This is a provisional design. It expresses the perfect sound quality of the PAL RADIO. But: I'm not satisfied, since the CASE covers, hides the beautiful design of the PAL RADIO. I want to solve that dilemma and try to 'showcase' the PAL RADIO as well.
Designer: Patrick Schols

PAL BOX Grand Luxe

This Quilted Patchwork Box has a special feature: With four soufflé’s on each side (see detailed picture) it opens like a flower after you remove the lid. So it is easy to take the Pal radio out of the box if you wish. The PAL radio is hidden, yet present. The Paisley Dessin of the tissue reminds you of the rich and luxury past times of The Orient Express… and other Great Railways! The PAL Radio also is an ideal ‘companion’ when you travel by train. Independent of the mains, discrete, private, grand luxe!
Designer: Mrs. T. Janssen – van Herten
Crafted: Mrs. T. Janssen – van Herten

PAL BOX Le Gamme

This quilted patchwork box has a special feature: it shows the available colours of the PAL (‘Le Gamme’) on the lid of the Box. And since it is a music box, you can find a few references to music and entertainment…(the choice of the tissues).

Out of Africa

The dark and intense colours of the Coromandel wood (colours of Africa) combined with the elegant lines of the Finnish Birchwood multiplex (Karen Blixen, Denmark, resembling the Nordic Countries) remind me of Africa, the most natural continent in the world and of the Book ‘Out of Africa’. This PAL CASE was created as a reminder to the famous Karen Blixen’s Book and film with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. I can still recall the movie-moments as if I saw the film yesterday……..
Since Ritmeester is known for its specialization in bent and rounded forms, I designed this special PAL CASE in harmony with the PAL Radio. Preferred PAL colour: black.
The Coromandel Wood was sprayed, the birchwood is kept natural to enhance the contrast.
Spraying : Arie van der Dussen
Designer: Willem Schulpen
Crafted: Bruno Verhoeff
Material: Coromandel Wood sprayed, Birchwood

PolderPAL

To point at the beauty of Dutch culture-landscape forms an important motive for his work: The typical culture-landscape of Holland, also called a ‘polderlandscape’, with it’s small canals and flat space, is under a lot of pressure the last 50 years. It suffers under building-projects of infrastructure, industrial complexes and houses. Therefore a new Dutch awareness must be made, an awareness that has attention for the cultural landscape with it’s big flat spaces and tries to protect the unique character of Holland.

Tombe Ronde

I started with a disc or CD, something round representing music. The round shape transferred into a bulb. Because of the size of the PAL radio, I could just fit two bulbs onto each side and one on the top and bottom. Every bulb is different, made from one, two or four pieces of wood. Suddenly the case looked a bit like the front of the PAL radio. The bulbs on the top and bottom were reversed to the inside, so the case could stand on its one.
Later on I added two knobs to the front as doorhandles (made from Wengé).
The two knobs on the back can be taken away to connect the PAL radio to an iPod and the power supply. The Tombe Ronde is made from Ash and is a sturdy case if you want to play the PAL radio outside or listen to your iPod.

The PAL BOX

Wanting to ´dress´ the PAL with a roundend wooden CASE, I designed this model, also enabling the listener to place the PAL Radio in all the directions/sides (upright, at all the sides and on its back). The lid closes perfectly and hides the radio. The material is untreated and feel is very soft and rounded. This PAL BOX brought me the idea to organize The PAL CASE CONTEST.

Material: Birch plywood, unfinished

The Beauty Case PAL

This Beauty Case is very versatile… It can stand in any direction (square, upright, flat..) and the lid is equipped with a ‘wave’, a ribble… that closes really perfectly! iPAL memo

Radios are often used in the kitchen, or in working places such as workshops or garages. As a result it is often necessary to place them out of the way, both to save space but also to keep the radio itself clean. The iPAL memo+ is a case which integrates the iconic PAL radio, and is intended to be mounted on a wall. As a radio is symbolically a source of information in itself, designers James Granger and Steven Kessels decided to apply two extra functions to the case which are essential to the workspace where the radio is intended to be used.
